William “Billy” Lee was the personal valet of George Washington for most of his life. William accompanied Washington regularly on surveying missions, battles, and visits to the House of Burgesses in Williamsburg. Upon Washington’s death, Lee was given a $30 pension, freedom to live at Mount Vernon, and was the only one of Washington’s 124 slaves freed outright.
